Daryle Hatley Sr. is the father of Daryle Jr, Tiara Elise, Taryana, and Tyra (Grayson). He is an entrepreneur and community activist and builder. His efforts can be seen on his company's website mcbrils.com businesswise.
Daryle's activism started in the 1990's after he decided not to pursue his football career to get involved with the community. As Otis Sanford mentioned on the Civil Wrongs Podcast produced by Laura Faith Kebede-Twumasi from the Institute for Public Service Reporting at University of Memphis with WKNO, "Most people didn’t really care all that much when a Black person was killed back in that day . . . In this particular case, it was the fact that they were drunk, off duty… all of that made the city leadership say, ‘No, we can’t have this." As chairman of the Institute for Public Service Reporting’s advisory board, Mr. Sanford - a longtime Memphis journalist and author of the book, “From Boss Crump to King Willie,” which covers Memphis politics during this era - said Davis’ motivations were to protect the reputation of the police department. In his book he's quoted sharing, "in 1988 by community activist Talib-Karim Muhammad, founder and director of the Islamic Center of Memphis . . . alleged that runoffs were discriminatory and deprived blacks of winning a citywide office . . . in February 1991, claiming that at-large elections, runoffs, and the city's annexation policies discriminate against black Memphians. With Republican President Bush's Justice Department now as a plaintiff in the dispute, city officials could no longer stonewall the case." This showcases the involvement of Otis Sanford, Dr. Talib-Karim Muhammad, and Daryle Hatley as he was a mentee of Dr. Muhammad during the 90s.
With this track record, Daryle can say that he is fully dedicated as he is on a panel and speaking coordinator with Dr. Muhammad's son. In early 2024 for Black History Month, STEM4US! Executive Director Talib Karim produced an event to face youth violence in the city of Memphis. Daryle's efforts continue economically through his efforts of offering apprenticeships. With his associated organization Family Man Enterprises, taking a seat as Comptroller, Daryle successfully kicked off the Apprenticeship Program and put on an event to showcase this initiative with the Apprenticeship Awareness Week Event in November 2024, with results going into 2025.
You can see these efforts mentioned here.
